About Our Products

Welcome to Mama!  All of our products are handmade in our production studio in Avondale Estates (Atlanta) using natural ingredients and pure essential oils - we never use any synthetic fragrance oils, colorants or dyes. All of our products are 100% natural, except for our lotions, which are 95% natural because they contain a preservative since they have water. Below are some questions we frequently get about our line. If you don’t see your question answered, please feel free to get in touch! You can call the shop during business hours: 404-377-7800 or email us: orders@loveyourmama.com

Q: Are your products all-natural?
A: Our sugar scrubs, bar soaps, lip balms, bath salts, liquid soaps, room sprays, body oils, & soy candles are 100% natural. Our lotions are 95% natural.

Q: What is the shelf life of your products?
A: Due to the natural ingredients we use in our products, they are meant to be used up. If products are properly stored (avoid extreme temperatures, keep out of direct sunlight, keep tightly capped, etc.) our lotions and sugar scrubs have a 9 month shelf life, and candles and soap have a 1 year shelf life. Everything is made and shipped fresh, to ensure that our customers get the maximum shelf life on their products.

Q: Do your products contain preservatives?
A: We use vitamin E, an all-natural ingredient to help slow down rancidity in our oils and butters. We do use a synthetic preservative in our lotions. This is because there are no natural alternatives that are effective in preserving products that contain water. We decided that safety was the most important consideration, as a staph infection would be a much worse alternative than a preservative.

Q: Why do you have to use preservatives in your lotions?
A: The short version is this: Water is the main ingredient in lotion. Anything with water has the potential to harbor bacteria. Bacteria in your lotion is a worse alternative than the (less than 1%) preservative we use in our formulas to prevent bacterial growth. We know it's not ideal, but it's the responsible thing to do. Consider it a lesser of the evils.

Q: Do your products contain parabens?
A: Nope! We use a paraben-free preservative called Optiphen.

Q: Are your products organic?
A: At this time, our products are not certified organic. However, we do use organic, sustainable palm oil, organic refined shea butter, and organic olive oil. Some palm oil cultivators create negative impacts on the environment including deforestation and loss of natural habitats, which has threatened critically endangered species, such as the orangutan and Sumatran tiger. We use ORGANIC, SUSTAINABLE palm oil that is harvested responsibly. Learn more about soaps here

Q: Are your products gluten free?
A: All of our products are gluten free except for our lavender + oatmeal soap, charcoal soap (which contains wheat germ), and bath salts (since they contain oatmeal). We do use Vitamin E in a lot of our products, but we've confirmed it's a gluten-free source. (Side note: Oats are naturally gluten free, but ours are not processed in a certified gluten free facility).

There is currently no scientific evidence showing that gluten used in cosmetics that are not ingested pose harm to individuals with celiac disease—including those with dermatitis herpetiformis, the skin form of the disease. Based on what we know right now, gluten must be ingested to trigger the immune response seen in celiac disease. Therefore, shoppers with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity shouldn’t worry about most products applied to the skin, such as body lotion, sunscreen, shaving cream and deodorant, especially if they wash their hands after use.

Q: Are your products vegan?
A: Yes, everything is vegan except for our lip balms and salves, which contain beeswax and honey almond soap, which contains honey.

Q: What do you use as colorants in your soaps?
A: We use herbs and flowers to color our soaps. We never use any synthetic dyes or colorants

Q: What are essential oils?
A: Essential oils are therapeutic, fragrant oils extracted from plants, and have numerous benefits, both mental and physical. They are used in the practice of aromatherapy, and in all of Mama's products!

Q: Why don't you have scents like gardenia, vanilla, cranberry or fig?
A: Those are all scents that are only available in synthetic fragrances. Unfortunately there are no natural alternatives for those kinds of scents.

Q: Are your products handmade?
A: Every single one of them is handmade with love and a mixer.

Q: Do you give free samples?
A: Yes, with every purchase!

Q: Are your products tested on animals?
A: Does my dog eating lotion count? (No, we don't test on animals! Only willing humans.)

Q: Can you change neighborhood and scent?
A: If you order at least 6 of one scent, we can customize a soap for you. Custom orders must be paid for ahead of time and please allow a 2 week turnaround. Learn more about custom soaps here

Q: Why is your company called Mama?
A: It’s an homage to the natural ingredients we use in our products and where they come from: Mother Nature, Mother Earth, Mama.
